Anyone who has listened to BBC radio 4 has probably heard of desert island discs. For those of you who haven’t it’s basically where celebs are invited onto the show and choose the pieces of music that they would have to have with them if they found themselves on a desert island.
This week I decided to pick 3 of my own desert island discs. As soon as I thought about this idea, these 3 songs instantly came to mind.
the story- Brandi Carlile
This song was introduced to me by my parents and was a staple in my childhood. I chose it to be the first dance song at my wedding and only last week got to finally hear it live. The third verse has always been something that has stuck with me and resonated with me especially in my younger years.
If you haven’t heard of her Brandi has one of the most incredible voices you will ever hear and her songwriting is top tier.
2. Call your mom- Noah Kahan
The first time I heard this song my heart stopped. Honestly, throughout most of this album I felt the same way. When I hear it I feel like it’s me talking to my younger self back when I truly believed I wasn’t going to make it out of my teenage years.
The part that always gets me is
“medicate, meditate, swear your soul to Jesus, through a punch, fall in love, give yourself a reason”
Medicate ✅
Fall in love ✅
Give yourself a reason ✅
As much as I’d love to say I meditate, my brain is a little too hectic for that!! My little boy Finn is and always will be my reason.
Dead Man’s Suit- Cherry Ghost
Last but not least I’ve got dead man’s suit by Cherry Ghost. The first time I heard this I was 16, in Malawi and all alone after I had been found medically unable to climb Mount Mulanje with the rest of Borders Exploration Group. A friend had left me their iPod and recommended Cherry Ghost to me. This particular song I actually skipped so many times because the start is pretty slow and I just instantly skipped but one day I decided to listen and when the prechorus and chorus hit I got goosebumps. I can’t even explain why this song has stuck with me for over a decade now but every time I hear it I still get those goosebumps.
So those are my desert island discs, thank you for reading!
